Floor Tiling Planner is an online tool that helps you plan how many tiles you need to cover a room, see how many tiles must be cut, and visualize the layout on a canvas before you buy a single tile.
This tool allows you to:
- Enter dimensions for one or more rooms
- Enter your tile size and grout gap
- Choose a layout pattern — straight, diagonal, or herringbone
- See a visual canvas with full tiles (green) and cut tiles (orange)
- Get a purchase estimate including a wastage allowance
How the Floor Tiling Planner Works
- Enter your tile width, height, grout gap, layout pattern, and wastage allowance in the Tile Settings panel
- Add one or more rooms with a name, length, and width in meters
- The tool instantly calculates and draws the tile layout for each room
- Review full tiles, cut tiles, and total tiles to buy per room and as a combined total
- Use the Copy button to copy the full summary to your clipboard
What This Tool Calculates
For each room, and as a total across all rooms:
- Total floor area — room length × width
- Area of one tile — tile width × height
- Number of full tiles — tiles that fit entirely within the room
- Number of cut tiles — tiles along the edges that must be trimmed to fit
- Extra tiles for wastage — a configurable percentage (default 10%) added to cover cutting waste and breakage
- Total tiles to buy — full + cut + wastage allowance
Layout Patterns
- Straight / Grid — tiles aligned in rows and columns, the most material-efficient pattern
- Diagonal (45°) — tiles rotated 45° to the walls, rendered on the canvas with accurate full/cut tile detection
- Herringbone — a calculation-only estimate is shown (a 15% minimum wastage is applied) since the interlocking tile shape isn’t drawn on the canvas
Why Use This Tool
Using Floor Tiling Planner helps you:
- Avoid under-ordering or over-ordering tiles for a renovation
- Estimate cutting waste before committing to a layout pattern
- Compare straight vs. diagonal layouts for the same room
- Plan multiple rooms (e.g. kitchen, bathroom, living room) in one place
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the wastage allowance calculated?
The tool adds your chosen wastage percentage (typically 5–10%, default 10%) on top of the full + cut tile count, rounded up to the nearest whole tile.
Does it support rooms that aren’t rectangular?
The current version supports rectangular rooms. For L-shaped rooms or rooms with cutouts, split the space into multiple rectangular rooms and add them separately, then use the combined totals.
Is my data stored?
No. All calculations run locally in your browser, and no input is sent to any server or stored anywhere.
Is this tool a substitute for professional advice?
No. This tool provides estimates for planning purposes only and does not replace measurements and quotes from a professional tiler.
